Ongoing work

A1(M), J6: junction improvement work

Work to improve the junction at A1(M) junction 6 is continuing. On Monday 10 August we will need to close the northbound entry slip road to install anti-skid surfacing. A clearly signposted diversion route will be in place directing traffic to travel via the B197 to rejoin the A1(M) at junction 7. Following this closure there will be a 24-hour hard shoulder closure and overnight lane closure past the works.

A120 Pellens Corner: investigation works

Work to carry out drainage and pavement investigations on the A120 at Pellens Corner will take place overnight. The work will take place on weeknights only between 8pm and 6am and is planned for completion by 14 August.

From Monday (10 August – 14 August) the A120 westbound will be closed overnight between Bentley Road and Harwich Road. A diversion will be clearly signposted directing road users to travel via the B1035 and A133 to re-join the A12. A diversion will also be in place for local traffic.

M1 J15 – 13 southbound: Survey works

Work to carry out drainage and pavement surveys on the southbound M1 between junctions 15 and 13 will continue from Monday 10 August. The work will be carried out between 9pm and 6am on weeknights and is planned to be completed by the end of August. During the work there will be a hard shoulder and lane 1 closure.

We are building a new 2.9-mile, two-lane dual carriageway running from north of Dunstable and joining the M1 at a new junction 11a, south of Chalton.Main construction started in March 2015.Three lanes will remain open on each carriageway, with traffic running on the hard shoulder and lanes 1 and 2. The roadworks, including safety barriers, signs, CCTV and average speed cameras, will stay in place throughout the junction construction work, which will be carried out in phases and should be finished in spring 2017 as the scheme nears completion. Work on the major improvement is due to complete in spring 2017. The scheme will have overnight lane closures and temporary slip roads for works access only on the northbound carriageway. On the A5 from the A505 roundabout traffic will be moved over to run on the east side of the carriageway on one lane in each direction to allow for embankment work.

Next week we will also have three-way traffic lights at the roundabout of the A5 and A505 north of Dunstable, this is to allow construction of the western verge for a cycleway and footway. On Sundon Road there will be two-way traffic signals Monday to Friday between the hours of 8.30am and 6.00pm For more information, visit the scheme website.

A12 J11-12, Brentwood, Essex: Improvements

We have substantially completed a major maintenance project to upgrade the A12 near Brentwood. We know that the slip roads at these junctions also need resurfacing so while we’re on the carriageway we have added this to the programme. We expect to carry out this work by 14 August for 10 nights. During the week commencing Monday 10 August there will be a northbound carriageway closure and southbound lane closures between junctions 12 and 11. There will be a clearly signed diversion route in place through Brentwood. Traffic will be directed to leave the A12 at J11, through Brentwood and along the B1002, and then back on to the A12 at J13.

A14 Girton to Histon (junctions 31 to 32): Lane gain scheme

Work to improve slip roads onto the M11 and A14 and to add an additional lane on the A14 in each direction between Girton and Histon was completed on Friday 10 April, with all three lanes in both directions now open with a reduced speed limit of 50mph.

We are carrying out some finishing off works, which include landscaping, street lighting and fully resurfacing the road between junctions 31 and 32. Between Saturday 8 and Friday 14 August the eastbound A14 between junctions 31 and 32 and westbound at both junctions 36 and 32 will be closed overnight between 8pm and 6am.

Work to rebuild the viaduct at Chelmer on the A138 started on 17 March 2015. The major improvement work on the Chelmer Viaduct in Chelmsford will take approximately 18 months to complete. Construction of the access road for the viaduct construction traffic and piling platforms for the pier construction has now started. Highways England is working with the industry and road users to reduce the risks of working on the roads. For the safety of road workers and all road users, when you are approaching roadworks:

  • keep within the speed limit – it is there for your safety
  • get into the correct lane in good time – don’t keep switching
  • concentrate on the road ahead, not the roadworks
  • be alert for works’ traffic leaving or entering roadworks
  • keep a safe distance – there could be queues in front
  • observe all signs – they are there to help you
