The following summary of planned new and ongoing road improvements over the coming week is correct as of 5 January 2017 but could be subject to change due to weather conditions or unforeseen circumstances. All our improvement work is carried out with the aim of causing as little disruption as possible.

M1 junctions 1 (A406) to 4 Elstree, Greater London: bridge joint replacement

Work to improve journeys by carrying out bridge joint replacements on the structure that carries M1 over the Thameslink railway line will start this week. The northbound carriageway (including the London Gateway entry slip road) will be closed overnight, between 10pm and 5.30am, from Tuesday 10 January for 4 nights. Work on Friday will start at 11pm. A clearly signed diversion will be in place via the A406, A41 and A47 to M1 junction 4.

M1 junction 3 London Gateway Services, Greater London: bridge joint replacement

Work to improve journeys by carrying out bridge joint replacements on the structure that carries M1 over the Thameslink railway line will continue this week. The southbound exit slip road will be closed overnight, between 10pm and 5.30am, on Monday 9 January. A clearly signed diversion will be in place via junction 1 and return.

M1 junction 6a (M25), Hertfordshire: maintenance

Work to maintain safety by carrying out maintenance will start this week. The southbound link road to the M25 anti-clockwise carriageway will be closed overnight, between 10pm and 5am, on Thursday 12 January. A clearly signed diversion will be in place via the M25 clockwise to junction 22 and return.

M3 junctions 2 (M25) to 4a Farnborough, Hampshire: Smart motorway improvement

Work to reduce congestion and improve journey times continues this week with narrow lanes a 50mph speed limit in place on both carriageways between junctions 2 and 4a, with a free recovery service operating 24 hours a day.

The southbound link road at junction 2 to the M25 clockwise will be closed overnight, between 8pm and 5.30am, from Monday 9 January for 5 nights. Work on Saturday morning will finish at 7am. A clearly signed diversion will be in place via the M25 anti-clockwise to junction 11 and return.

The northbound carriageway between junctions 4 and 2 will be closed overnight, between 8pm and 5.30am, from Monday 9 January for 6 nights. Work on Saturday and Sunday mornings will finish at 7am. A clearly signed diversion will be in place via the A331, A30 to M25 junction 13.

The southbound carriageway between junctions 2 and 4a will be closed overnight, between 8pm and 5.30am, from Monday 9 January for 5 nights. Work on Saturday will finish at 7am. A clearly signed diversion will be in place via M25 junction 13, A30 and the A327 to M3 junction 4a.

The southbound carriageway between junctions 3 and 4 will be closed overnight, between 8pm and 7am, on Saturday 14 January. A clearly signed diversion will be in place via the A322, A30 and A331 to M3 junction 4.

M4 junction 4 Heathrow, Middlesex: inspection

Work to improve journeys by carrying out inspection work will start this week. The eastbound entry slip road will be closed overnight, between 10pm and 5am, from Wednesday 11 January for 3 nights. Work on Friday will start at 11pm. A clearly signed diversion will be in place via M4 westbound to junction 5 and return.

M4 junction 5 Colnbrook, Berkshire: repairs

Work to improve journeys by carrying out carriageway repairs will start this week. The westbound exit slip road will be closed overnight, between 10pm and 5am, on Thursday 12 January. A clearly signed diversion will be in place via junction 6 and return.

M25 junction 8 Reigate, Surrey: horticulture

Work to improve journeys by carrying out horticulture work will start this week. The clockwise exit and entry slip roads will be closed overnight, between 10pm and 5am, from Monday 9 January for 4 nights. A clearly signed diversion for the exit slip road will be in place to junction 9 and return. A clearly signed diversion for the entry slip road will be in place via M25 anti-clockwise to junction 6 and return.

M25 junction 12 (M3), Surrey: Smart motorway improvement

Work to reduce congestion and improve journey times continues this week. The dedicated link roads from the M25 clockwise and anti-clockwise to the M3 southbound will be closed overnight, between 8pm and 5.30am, from Monday 9 January for 5 nights. Work on Saturday morning will finish at 7am. A clearly signed diversion for the will be in place via M25 junction 13, A30 and A327 to M25 junction 4a.

M25 junction 14, Heathrow, Middlesex: carriageway repairs

Work to improve journeys by carrying out carriageway repairs will start this week. The anti-clockwise exit slip road and the dedicated terminal 5 spur road will be closed overnight, between 10pm and 5am, on Tuesday 10 January. A clearly signed diversion will be in place to junction 13 and return.

M25 junction 16 (M40) Buckinghamshire: electrical

Work to improve journeys by carrying out electrical work will start this week. The clockwise link roads to the M40 will be closed overnight, between 10pm and 5am, on Wednesday 11 January. A clearly signed diversion will be in place via junction 17 and return.

The anti-clockwise link roads to the M40 will be closed overnight, between 10pm and 5am, on Thursday 12 January. A clearly signed diversion will be in place via junction 14 and return.

M25 junction 17 Maple Cross, Hertfordshire: resurfacing

Work to improve journeys by carrying out carriageway resurfacing will start this week. The clockwise carriageway will be closed overnight, between 10pm and 5.30am, on Monday 9 January. A clearly signed diversion will be in place via the exit and entry slip roads.

M25 junction 18 Chorleywood, Hertfordshire: resurfacing

Work to improve journeys by carrying out resurfacing will start this week. The anti-clockwise entry slip road will be closed overnight, between 10pm and 5.30am, from Monday 9 January for 2 nights. A clearly signed diversion will be in place via M25 clockwise to junction 19 and return.

M25 junction 21a St Albans, Hertfordshire: maintenance

Work to maintain safety by carrying out maintenance will start this week. The clockwise carriageway will be closed overnight, between 10pm and 5am, on Thursday 12 January. A clearly signed diversion will be in place via the exit and entry slip roads.

M25 junctions 22 London Colney, Hertfordshire: resurfacing

Work to improve journeys by carrying out resurfacing will continue this week. The anti-clockwise entry slip road will be closed overnight, between 10pm and 5.30am, from Monday 9 January for 4 nights and on Sunday 15 January. A clearly signed diversion will be in place via the M25 clockwise to junction 23 and return.

M25 junction 23 South Mimms, Hertfordshire: repairs

Work to improve journeys by carrying out carriageway repairs will start this week. The clockwise exit slip road will be closed overnight, between 11pm and 5am, on Friday 13 January. A clearly signed diversion will be in place via junction 24 and return.

M25 junction 24 Potters Bar, Hertfordshire: carriageway repairs

Work to improve journeys by carrying out carriageway repairs will start this week. The clockwise exit and entry slip roads will be closed overnight, between 10pm and 5am, from Monday 9 January for 3 nights. A clearly signed diversion for the exit slip road will be in place to junction 25 and return. A clearly signed diversion for the entry slip road will be in place via M25 anti-clockwise to junction 23 and return.

The anti-clockwise entry slip road will be closed overnight, between 10pm and 5am, on Thursday 12 January. A clearly signed diversion will be in place via the M25 clockwise to junction 25 and return.

M25 junctions 31 Lakeside to 30 Thurrock, Essex: technology

Work to improve journeys by carrying out technology work continues this week. The anti-clockwise carriageway will be closed overnight, between 10pm and 5.30am, from Monday 9 January for 5 nights. Work on Friday will start at 11pm. A clearly signed diversion will be in place via junction 31 link road to junction 30.

M25 junction 31 Lakeside, Essex: lighting

Work to improve journeys by carrying out lighting improvement will continue this week. The clockwise entry slip road will be closed overnight, between 10pm and 5.30am, from Monday 9 January for 5 nights. Work on Friday will start at 11pm. A clearly signed diversion will be in place via junction 30 and return.

M40 junction 1a (M25), Buckinghamshire: electrical

Work to improve journeys by carrying out electrical work will start this week. The westbound link roads to the M25 will be closed overnight, between 10pm and 5am, on Monday 9 January. A clearly signed diversion will be in place via the M40 westbound to junction 2 and return.

The eastbound link roads to the M25 will be closed overnight, between 10pm and 5am, on Tuesday 10 January. A clearly signed diversion will be in place via M40 eastbound to junction 1 and return.

A1(M) junction 2 Welham Green, Hertfordshire: horticulture

Work to improve journeys carrying out horticulture work will start this week. The southbound entry slip road will be closed overnight, between 10pm and 5am, on Thursday 12 January. A clearly signed diversion will be in place via the A1001 to junction 4 and return.

A1(M) junction 4 Hertford, Hertfordshire: horticulture

Work to improve journeys carrying out horticulture work will start this week. The southbound exit slip road will be closed overnight, between 10pm and 5am, on Wednesday 11 January. A clearly signed diversion will be in place via junction 3 and return.

A1(M) junction 6 Welwyn, Hertfordshire: horticulture

Work to improve journeys carrying out horticulture work will start this week. The southbound entry slip road will be closed overnight, between 10pm and 5am, on Monday 9 January. A clearly signed diversion will be in place via A1(M) northbound to junction 7 and return.

A2 Dartford Heath, Kent: inspection

Work to maintain safety by carrying out inspections will start this week. The eastbound exit slip road will be closed overnight, between 10pm and 5am, on Monday 9 January. A clearly signed diversion will be in place to M25 junction 2 roundabout and return.

The westbound entry slip road will be closed overnight, between 10pm and 5am, on Tuesday 10 January. A clearly signed diversion will be in place via the A2 eastbound to the M25 junction 2 roundabout and return.

A282 (M25) Dartford – Thurrock Crossing: maintenance

Work to improve journeys at the Dartford Crossing continues this week:

  • Monday 9 January (8.30pm to 5.30am) northbound west tunnel
  • Tuesday 10 January (8.30pm to 5.30am) northbound west tunnel
  • Wednesday 11 January (8.30pm to 5.30am) northbound west tunnel
  • Thursday 12 January (8.30pm to 5.30am) northbound west tunnel
  • Friday 13 January (9pm to 5.30am) northbound west tunnel
  • Saturday 14 January (8.30pm to 5.30am) northbound west tunnel
  • Sunday 15 January (8.30pm to 5.30am) northbound west tunnel

The QEII Bridge will have three (of four) lanes closed overnight, between 10pm and 5.30am, from Monday 9 January for 5 nights. Work on Friday will start at 11pm.

A282 junction 1a Swanscombe, Kent: tunnel maintenance

Work to maintain safety by carrying out tunnel maintenance continues this week. The northbound entry slip road will be closed overnight, between 8.30pm and 5.30am, from Monday 9 January for 7 consecutive nights. A clearly signed diversion will be in place via the A282 southbound to junction 1b and return.

A1089 Tilbury Essex: horticulture work

Work to improve journeys by carrying out horticulture work will start this week. The northbound exit and entry slip roads for the A126 Grays will be closed overnight, between 11pm and 5am, on Friday 13 January. A clearly signed diversion will be in place for the exit slip road via the A13 eastbound to the Brentwood (A128) junction and return. A clearly signed diversion will be in place for the entry slip road via the A126, Calcutta Road, A1089 to the Dock Road roundabout.
