Planned road works in the North West: summary for Monday 7 to Sunday 13 December 2015

The following summary of planned new and ongoing road improvements over the coming week is correct as of Friday, 4 December and could be subject to change due to weather conditions or unforeseen circumstances. All our improvement work is carried out with the aim of causing as little disruption as possible.

M53 Moreton Spur

Due to severe weather, the 9 week resurfacing project will now start on Wednesday (9 December). The work features overnight closures of the M53 at junction 2 including slip roads and the main carriageway (10pm to 5am each night; week nights only).

M6 junction 19-20

Traffic management for a £14.5 million programme of bridge repairs and new safety barriers will now – due to severe weather - be set out next week with overnight closures of either the northbound or southbound carriageway.

M6 junction 34 Lancaster

Lancashire County Council work off the motorway on the Heysham Link project is requires a lane 1 closure in both directions on the motorway around junction 34.

M60 junction 8 Sale to M62 junction 20 Rochdale

A major scheme is taking place to cut congestion and improve journey times on parts of the M60 and the M62 in Greater Manchester. The scheme involves overnight slip road and carriageway closures with a 50mph limit in place for the safety of workers and drivers. The project is due to be completed in autumn 2017. Weekend work to remove large gantries between junction 19 and junction 20 of the M62 resumes next weekend with a full overnight carriageway closure from 9pm on Saturday (12 December) to 10am on Sunday (13 December).

M62 junction 10/M6 junction 21a Croft Interchange

The exit slip roads from the westbound M62 onto the northbound M6, and from the eastbound M62 onto the southbound M6, will be closed overnight, between 8pm and 6am while repair work takes place on the motorway bridges. Drivers will be able to follow clearly-signed diversion routes. Narrow lanes and a temporary 50mph speed limit will also be in place on the slip roads during the day. The scheme is due to be completed this month.

A5036 Litherland

A £1.7 million project to resurface the main road to the Port of Liverpool is due to finish in February. A 2 ½ mile stretch of the A5036 is being resurfaced from the junction with the M57 and the M58, known as Switch Island, to the junction with Hawthorne Road. All of the work will be carried out overnight to keep disruption to drivers to a minimum, and clearly-signed diversions will be in place when short stretches of the road are closed.

A556 Knutsford to Bowdon

A £192 million project is being carried out to create a new dual carriageway linking the M56 to the M6 in Cheshire. A temporary 40mph speed limit is currently in place between Bucklow Hill and Bowdon, and the new dual carriageway is expected to open in winter 2016/17.

The closure of the slip road onto the westbound M56 at junction 8 will be lifted by Monday, 14 December. Next week – between 9pm and 5am on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday nights (9, 10 and 11 December) - the southbound A556 between Bowdon Roundabout and Bucklow Hill will be closed to the allow traffic management to removed.

A56 Haslingden

Work to improve safety for drivers and pedestrians near the junction with the A680 is taking place - with new steel safety barriers and better pedestrian crossing arrangements including a new crossing island. Overnight – 8pm to 5am – lane closures will be in place during the week and around the clock at weekends. Some full carriageway closures on Friday and Sunday nights will also be needed to install, adjust or remove traffic management with clearly-signed diversions in place. The scheme is due to be completed in January.

A585 Skippool to Singleton

Work began in September to improve drainage and footpaths along this section of the route. Work will take place around the clock but temporary traffic signals will only be used overnight. The project should be completed before Friday 18 December

A585 Skippool and Eros roundabouts

A 2 week, weather dependent, scheme is underway to repair or replace road signs and carry out associated electrical works. Narrow lanes will be in place during the work. During the evening and overnight, temporary traffic lights will be in place at Thisleton Road southern junction.

A590 Lindale

Work is taking place to replace the verge-side safety barrier along a dual carriageway section and will be completed by Sunday, 20 December.

A590 Brettargh Holt

Wear and tear repairs along the westbound carriageway between Brettargh Holt roundabout and the junction with the A6 is underway. Full overnight closures of the westbound carriageway are due to take place for up to 8 nights from Monday (7 December).

A590 Greenodd

Lane 1 of the eastbound carriageway just west of Greenodd roundabout is currently closed until further notice while we undertake a survey of the embankment.

A595 Lillyhall to A66 at Dobies

A £500,000 drainage project is underway and is due to be completed by Friday 15, January. The work involves nightly – 8pm to 6am - closures of the northbound carriageway between Joseph Nobles Road and the roundabout with the A66 at Dobies with daytime traffic signals between 6am and 8pm each day.

A595 West Lakes Science Park

Work to install new traffic lights at this junction was completed ahead of schedule this morning (Friday, 4 December).

A66 M6 to Kemplay roundabout

A lane of the eastbound carriageway will be closed from Monday (7 December) until the end of January for utility company works. The closure will be removed during the Christmas and New Year holiday period.

A66 Appleby

A £1.76 million carriageway reconstruction project near Crackenthorpe began in mid-October and will last until Sunday 20 December. Temporary traffic lights are in place – manually controlled during the day – and a 40mph speed limit will also be in place past the road works.

A66 Bassenthwaite Lake

A programme of work to update safety cameras and carry out rock face protection started has now been completed. Work to improve drainage in the area has now started.

A66 Troutbeck

Work to resurface and repair drainage along a section of the A66 west of the new junction lay-out at Troutbeck started in November. The work will be completed by Wednesday, 23 December.
