Planned road works in the North West: summary for Monday, 18 January to Sunday, 24 January 2016
Summary of planned new and ongoing road improvements over the coming week.
The following summary of planned new and ongoing road improvements over the coming week is correct as of Friday, 15 January, and could be subject to change due to weather conditions or unforeseen circumstances. All our improvement work is carried out with the aim of causing as little disruption as possible.
M53 Moreton Spur
A 9 week resurfacing project started in December. The work features overnight closures of the M53 at junction 2 including slip roads and the main carriageway (10pm to 5am each night; week nights only).
M55 junction 3 to 1
On Saturday 16 January a one mile stretch of the eastbound carriageway to the east of junctions 3 is to be resurfaced. The work to introduce the new surface, and to replace drains, is scheduled to last around 4 weeks, subject to suitable weather conditions.
M6 junctions 16 to 19
Pre-construction work for the smart motorway upgrade is underway – typically with 1 or 2 lanes closed overnight between junctions in both directions and or mobile lane closures along short sections of carriageway.

M6 junctions 19 to 20
Traffic management for a £14.5 million programme of bridge repairs and new safety barriers has now been set out with narrow lanes, 50 mph speed limit and use of the hard shoulder as a running lane in places.

M6 junction 34 Lancaster
Lancashire County Council work off the motorway on the Heysham Link project requires a lane 1 and hard shoulder closure in both directions on the motorway around junction 34.
The southbound exit slip road will be closed from 1am tomorrow (Saturday 16 January) until 8pm on Sunday (17 January) with the southbound entry slip road closed from 8pm tomorrow until 6am on Sunday. Caton Road under the motorway will be closed between 8pm and 6am on Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights (21, 22 and 23 January).

M60 junction 8 Sale to M62 junction 20 Rochdale
A major scheme is taking place to cut congestion and improve journey times on parts of the M60 and the M62 in Greater Manchester. The scheme involves overnight slip road and carriageway closures with a 50mph limit in place for the safety of workers and drivers. The M62 will also be closed overnight in both directions between junctions 19 and 20 tomorrow (Saturday, 16 January) between 10pm and 6am, with a clearly-signed diversion in place.

A5036 Litherland
A £1.7 million project to resurface the main road to the Port of Liverpool is due to finish in March. A 2 ½ mile stretch of the A5036 is being resurfaced from the junction with the M57 and the M58, known as Switch Island, to the junction with Hawthorne Road. All of the work will be carried out overnight to keep disruption to drivers to a minimum, and clearly-signed diversions will be in place when short stretches of the road are closed.
A5117 New Footway/Cycleway
Work has started to provide a new shared footway and cycleway on the A5117, between its 2 junctions with Powey Lane. The new route will improve safety as well as connectivity for pedestrians and cyclists. The work is taking place between 9am and 3.30pm Monday to Friday with temporary traffic lights in place and is scheduled to last for 8 weeks.
A556 Knutsford to Bowdon
A £192 million project is being carried out to create a new dual carriageway linking the M56 to the M6 in Cheshire. A temporary 40mph speed limit is currently in place between Bucklow Hill and Bowdon, and the new dual carriageway is expected to open in winter 2016/17.

A56 Haslingden
Work has started to improve safety for drivers and pedestrians near the junction with the A680 with new steel safety barriers and better pedestrian crossing arrangements including a new crossing island. Overnight – 8pm to 5am – lane closures will be in place during the week and around the clock at weekends. Some full carriageway closures on Friday and Sunday nights will also be needed to install, adjust or remove traffic management with clearly-signed diversions in place. The scheme is now due to be completed in March.
A585 Fleetwood
Work starts on Monday 18 January a mile long stretch of A585 in Fleetwood between the Station Road roundabout and the Dock Street/Warren St junction. The scheme includes road and footpath resurfacing, drainage repairs and pedestrian safety barrier replacement. Work is scheduled for 6 weeks, subject to suitable weather conditions, and the majority will be carried out during the day using temporary traffic lights. Two night closures are planned for Saturday 13 February (10pm to 10.30am) and Sunday 14 February (4.30pm to 8am).
A590 Lindale Hill
Work resumed on 10 January to install new safety barriers and is due to last for a further 3 weeks.
A590 Brettargh Holt
Wear and tear repairs have been taking place along the westbound carriageway between Brettargh Holt roundabout and the Meathop roundabout. There are 2 overnight closures of the westbound carriageway (the final 2 of 6) on Monday, 18 and Tuesday 19 January - 8pm and 6am. The closure will incorporate maintenance work west of Brettargh Holt roundabout and safety improvements at Levens. Drivers on the A6 will be diverted onto the eastbound A590 and will join the official diversion for the overnight closures which will take traffic along the A591 from Brettargh Holt roundabout up to Windermere and then south along the A592 back onto the A590 at Newby Bridge.
Additionally, the westbound exit slip road onto the A6 will also be closed on Saturday, 16 January - 8pm to 6am, with a diversion in place along the A590 via Meathop roundabout.
A590 Greenodd
Lane 1 of the eastbound carriageway just west of Greenodd roundabout is currently closed until further notice while we undertake a survey of the embankment.
A590 Levens
Work will start on Monday (18 January) to install a vehicle automated sign along he westbound carriageway ahead of Foulshaw Lane. The work includes overnight carriageway closures on the westbound carriageway (see above entry - A590 Brettargh Holt – for details) and the eastbound carriageway on Wednesday and Thursday of next week (20 and 21 January).

A595 Lillyhall to A66 at Dobies
A £500,000 drainage project started in November resumed on Monday, 11 January. The work is weather dependent but is due to last for a further 5 weeks. Temporary traffic lights will be used during the day with a northbound road closure overnight and a signed diversion in place.
A66 Burns to Briery Interchange footway works
Work began on Monday 11 January to install a new footpath linking the A66 and A591 as well as carry out carriageway repairs including strengthening and resurfacing. The work is due to last for a further 6 weeks and will take place between 9.30am and 3.30pm each day with temporary traffic lights in place. The westbound exit slip will be closed for 2 weeks from the end of January for resurfacing works with a diversion in place via Crosthwaite roundabout.
A66 M6 to Kemplay roundabout
A lane of the eastbound carriageway was closed for utility company works. This has now been reduced to a layby closure. The work is due to be completed by the end of January.
A66 Stainburn bypass
Overnight work started on Monday 11 January to resurface the carriageway between Chapel Brow and Stainburn roundabouts near Workington. The carriageway will be closed in both directions between 8pm and 6am each night with a signed diversion in place.
A66 Appleby
A £1.76 million carriageway reconstruction project near Crackenthorpe began in mid-October. The work is now expected to last until Friday, 22 January.
A66 Bassenthwaite Lake
Due to flooding and damage to the carriageway, the westbound dual carriageway is currently closed and awaiting repair. A contraflow system has been installed so drivers travelling westbound can use a lane of the eastbound carriageway.
