Press release

Overnight closures at A1 near Elkesley in Nottinghamshire

Overnight closures will be in place at the A1 near Elkesley for a week from this Friday (5 to 12 December) as work on the Elkesley junction improvement scheme continues.

The closures are necessary to safely lift the overbridge beams into position over the road and have been planned overnight to minimise disruption to road users. This work was initially due to take place last week but due to technical difficulties has had to be postponed for this weekend.

There will be a lane 2 closure in place on the A1 northbound through the works from11pm on Friday 5 December to 6am the following morning. A full closure will be in place on the A1 northbound from the A46 junction at Newark to the northbound slip-road at Apleyhead between 8.30pm and 11am from Saturday 6 to Sunday 7 December. On Sunday night (7 December) a full closure will be in place again from 8pm until 6am on Monday 8 December.

The A1 southbound at Apleyhead to the southbound road at Twyford Bridge will be fully closed on Friday 5 December from 8pm to 9am the following day.

On Saturday 6 December the closure will be in place again between 11.30pm to 5am on Sunday 7 December and on Sunday night from 11pm to 3am on Monday 8 December.

Next week there will be additional overnight closures so that further work to the bridge deck construction can take place. The same northbound closure will be in place on Monday night from 9pm until 6am the following morning. Southbound closures will be in place between Tuesday and Thursday night from 9pm to 6am.

Graham Littlechild, project sponsor for the scheme, said:

The work we’re undertaking during the necessary closures is the next step of this important scheme to improve safety at the busy junction and enhance connectivity across the village.

During the closures, diversions will be in place and I urge road users to plan their journeys leaving extra time, particularly in case of extended closures becoming necessary due to the nature of the work.

Once the scheme is completed motorists can expect safer and better journey.

During the southbound closure traffic will be diverted to the A614 Blyth Road, A616 Ollerton Road, Back Lane, Wellow Road, Newark Road, Ollerton Road, Great North Road and then the A46 to re-join the A1. The diversion for the northbound closure will be the same but reversed.

All diversions will be clearly signed in advance of any closures.
