Press release

Overnight A1 southbound closure, North Yorkshire

Drivers are advised that the planned full A1 closures taking place on Saturday evening (7 March) will now take place on the southbound carriageway only, and will be between junction 56 (Barton) and Scotch Corner.

Work will be taking place to repair a number of large potholes on the southbound carriageway. During the closure a signed diversion route will be in place which will be suitable for all diverted traffic. This diversion route is approximately 40 miles long and drivers will be advised to add an extra 50 minutes to journey times.

The diversion route for long distance traffic is via the A68 (West Auckland), A688 (Staindrop and Stainton Grove), A67 (Barnard Castle), Newgate/Westwick Road, and the A66. The diversion route plans can be viewed on the attached at and on the Highways Agency website: http://www.highways.gov.uk/roads/road-projects/A1-Leeming-to-Barton-Improvement

The original full A1 closure planned for this Saturday was between Scotch Corner and junction 50 (Baldersby), and was planned to switch the scheme traffic management. However, recent poor weather conditions have caused problems draining the area and this work will now be rescheduled to take place at a future date.
