New ferry passenger boarding facility in Plymouth

MMO Marine Licensing team grants marine licence, allowing for works to begin.

Associated British Ports (ABP) have been granted a marine licence for the installation of a new passenger boarding facility on the west wharf of the Millbay Ferry Terminal in Plymouth.

The facility consists of a movable and extendable bridge which can reach multiple docking positions.

Due to the location and nature of the works the MMO Marine Licensing team had to consider the potential impact to Allis Shad as part of the application process. The Allis Shad is a fish from the herring family, which is a protected species.

The team collaborated with Natural England and Cefas as part of the standard consultation process. This led to conditions being attached to the marine licence that protected Allis Shad while also allowing the applicant to undertake the works.

The installation of the new boarding facility will make the terminal more practical and efficient for users.
