A new easy-to-use online tool has been launched so people can check the performance of the coroner service in their area.

It provides data on:

  • Deaths reported to coroners
  • Inquests and post-mortem examinations
  • Timeliness of inquests
  • Inquest verdicts

The device has been published today to coincide with the first Chief Coroner of England and Wales taking on new powers which will help to drive improvement across the coroner system.

Users can check local statistics and compare them against other areas, or the overall picture for England and Wales.

Justice Minister Helen Grant said:

“We are making absolutely sure that the needs of bereaved people are put first and foremost – and that this is done consistently around the country.

“I want to see all coroners delivering the same, efficient service across the board, and we have put these changes in law so people can be assured inquests are being conducted quickly, with adequate care and the right support available for those who have lost loved ones.”

The Government has put into place a number of reforms to improve the coroner system for bereaved families, including creating the role of the Chief Coroner and implementing a new national framework which will mean all 96 coroners will work to the same standards.
