The New Climate Economy conference in Budapest was a joint project of the Association of Hungarian Economists and the British, German and French Embassies. It aimed to present and discuss the outcomes of the Better Economy, Better Climate Report issued by the Global Commission on Economy and Climate Change, namely that countries at all levels of income now have the opportunity to build lasting economic growth at the same time as reducing the immense risks of climate change.

The conference’s aim was dual: presenters and participants examined how the findings of the Report could be utilized in the Hungarian economy and economic management. Secondly, with the help of economic and climate change professionals, they were informed of local best practices, which similarly confirmed the Report’s findings.

The event was unique in attracting a really exclusive line of speakers and in securing unusually high level of media interest.

Presenters included János Pásztor, Assistant Secretary-General on Climate Change of the United Nations, László Varró, Head of the Gas, Coal and Power Market Division of the International Energy Agency, Zsolt Szabó, Hungarian Minister of State for Development and Climate Policy and Priority Public Services, Csaba Kőrösi Director of Environmental Sustainability of the Office of the President of the Republic in Hungary.

The lecturers of the conference and the experts on the three panels agreed that it is of major importance for Hungary to boost economic growth, while implementing EU decarbonisation and climate policy objectives.
