New appointments to the Marine Management Organisation board

Two new board members appointed

Mark Ripley and Professor Judith Petts CBE have today (Friday 24 May) been appointed to the board of the Marine Management Organisation (MMO).

Mark’s appointment will commence on 1 July 2024 and will run for four years until 30 June 2028. Judith’s appointment will run for four years from 1 October 2024 until 30 September 2028.

These appointments have been made in accordance with the Ministerial Governance Code on Public Appointments.

Biographies

Mark Ripley

Mark has extensive experience in governance, risk and internal audit roles in a range of central government departments and private sector organisations. He was formerly the Director of Risk and Assurance at the Ministry of Justice, Group Chief Internal Auditor for the Department for Work and Pensions, and the Head of the European Social Fund Audit Authority. Mark has provided risk consulting services to a range of health, further education, housing and private sector organisations. He was a Director in HM Treasury’s Government Finance Function, where he led on risk and assurance across central government, including updating the standard for Risk Management, known as the Orange Book.

He is a Chartered Management Accountant – Fellow (FCMA) and a Fellow of The Chartered Institute of Internal Auditors –UK (FCIIA).

Professor Judith Petts CBE

Professor Judith Petts has been Vice-Chancellor and Chief Executive of the University of Plymouth since February 2016, a role from which she will retire in September 2024. She joined Plymouth from the University of Southampton where she had been Pro-Vice-Chancellor Research and Enterprise and previously the inaugural Dean of the Faculty of Social and Human Sciences. Prior to this, she spent 12 years at the University of Birmingham as a Pro-Vice-Chancellor for Research and Knowledge Transfer.

Currently, Judith is a Director of the Heart of the South-West LEP, a Trustee of the Marine Biological Association and a member of the Board of the Great South West Pan-Regional Partnership. In addition, she has chaired the UK Climate Action Steering Group. She was previously a member of the Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council, the Natural Environment Research Council’s Innovation Board, the Science Advisory Council of Defra and the Royal Commission on Environmental Pollution, amongst other roles.

She was appointed Commander of the Order of the British Empire in the Queen’s New Year Honours 2012, for services to Scientific Research.
