Michael Plaut OBE appointed as BBC Board Member for Wales

Following Privy Council approval on 22 May, Michael Plaut OBE has been appointed for a four year term from 1 June 2024 to 31 May 2028.

Michael is a Welsh business leader with extensive executive and non-executive leadership experience in the commercial and non-profit sectors. He has advised governments in both Westminster and Cardiff Bay on the Welsh economy and Welsh business. Michael has appeared regularly in the media commenting on business and economic issues pertaining to Wales. A global exporter, Michael is widely travelled and brings an international perspective. 

He is a former Chair of the Confederation of British Industry (CBI) Wales, he is Chair of the Royal Welsh College of Music & Drama and a Governor of the University of South Wales. 

Michael was born and brought up in Wales. He started his career as an investment banker in London before returning to Wales to lead a Wales based company. He was awarded an OBE for services to business and entrepreneurship. Michael lives and works in Wales.

Remuneration and Governance Code

The base fee for all BBC non-executive directors is £33,000 per annum. A committee chair fee of £5,000 is paid on top of the base fee for chairing one of the permanent committees of the Board. This appointment has been made in accordance with the Cabinet Office’s Governance Code on Public Appointments. The appointments process is regulated by the Commissioner for Public Appointments. Under the Code, any significant political activity undertaken by an appointee in the last five years must be declared. This is defined as including holding office, public speaking, making a recordable donation, or candidature for election. Michael Plaut OBE has not declared any significant political activity.
