Malayalam booklet for VAW practitioners in Kerala launched today
First of its kind UK supported project in Kerala to have national impact in preventing & tackling violence against women (VAW).
A first of its kind project in Kerala supported by the British Deputy High Commission, Chennai, will have national impact in helping to prevent and tackle violence against women (VAW). The 1-2 day workshops running from 6 to 10 December are aimed at sensitising, empowering officers (legal, police, judicial) who have a bearing on preventing & tackling VAW.
The project will make a difference in three ways:

the 130 officers benefiting from the workshops will take back new learning to districts across Kerala and influence speedier and improved access to justice for women. Workshop delegates include public prosecutors, sub-inspectors, circle inspectors, DYSPs, police academy trainers, protection officers and lawyers who deal with VAW cases daily. The impact will be state-wide because many are trainers themselves influencing the knowledge and practice of colleagues in the districts.

flowing from these workshops will be a newly designed learning and sharing manual that can be used by VAW practitioners across India, to better understand and contextualise historical and new legislation and practice. The new manual will be launched nationally in New Delhi next year.

the Malayalam version of two VAW booklets that the British High Commission had supported publishing, launched today in Ernakulam in the presence of Hon’ble Justice Kurian Joseph, Judge Supreme Court of India, will have wider use in Kerala. The booklets “Locating the Survivor in the Indian Criminal Justice System: Decoding the Law” and “Frequently Asked Questions: a Guide for Survivors of Sexual Violence” are meant to be a practical guide for VAW survivors and practitioners. Kerala’s Social Justice Department has arranged to mass print and disseminate the new Malayalam booklet to VAW practitioners across Kerala.

The workshop for 30 public prosecutors on 6 December in Kochi is convened and delivered in partnership with Kerala’s Directorate of Public Prosecutors. The workshop for 55 police officers running from 7 to 8 December in Thrissur is convened and delivered in partnership with the police academy in Thrissur. The workshop for 45 lawyers running from 9 to 10 December in Kochi is convened and delivered in partnership with the Kerala State Legal Services Authority. The week-long workshops in Kerala in December follow a similar series of workshops held in Tamil Nadu in November, also supported by the High Commission and coincide with the UN’s 16 Days of Activism to end VAW.
