Press release

M4 closed overnight for start of bridge maintenance work

The M4 in West Berkshire will be closed overnight between junctions 12 (Theale) and 14 (Hungerford) next week for the start of essential bridge maintenance work.

The eastbound carriageway will be closed between 10pm and 6am on Monday 9 and Tuesday 10 March. The westbound carriageway will be closed between 10pm and 6am on Wednesday 11 and Thursday 12 March.

These closures mark the start of essential bridge maintenance work to ensure that the M4 Welford Viaduct (between junctions 13 and 14) and the M4 Junction 13 Chieveley Interchange structures remain in a safe and serviceable condition. The closures are to allow for the installation of narrow lanes and a contraflow, which will be in place 24 hours a day until the autumn.

The essential work that is needed on the bridges includes the expansion joint and beam replacement, concrete repairs, strengthening of the hard shoulder, construction of crossover points, waterproofing and resurfacing.

Steve Cobb, Structures Manager at the Highways Agency said, “The work will ensure that the bridges remain in a safe condition and will reduce the need for any future emergency maintenance closures.”

A clearly signed diversion will be in place via the A4 for the duration of the carriageway closures.
