Lord Bourne: “It is time to settle the constitutional debate in Wales for the long term”
Wales Office Minister addresses the Academy of Social Sciences
Wales Office Minister Lord Bourne will call for an end to the constitutional debate in Wales and shift focus on delivering for Welsh people when he addresses Fellowes of the Academy of Social Sciences in London today (14 July).
Speaking at the launch of the Academy’s publication ‘Making the Case for Sciences Wales’, Lord Bourne will reinforce the UK Government’s commitment to devolution, decentralisation and to pushing power down to the local level in Wales.
He will set out the philosophy at the heart of the St David’s Day agreement, which announced landmark funding measures and more powers for the National Assembly. He will also reinforce the importance of decision-making at a local level.
Speaking ahead of the event, Wales Office Minister Lord Bourne said:
I am delighted to have the opportunity to speak at this event today. Social sciences play a vital role in policy making, giving us a real insight into the issues facing society today – none more so than devolution.
What we are hearing from the people of Wales is that there should be a clear purpose for powers being devolved. They should be used to make Wales stronger, benefiting business and improving the lives of people across the length and breadth of the country.
Through the St David’s Day agreement and subsequent Wales Bill, we are entering a new era of devolution for Wales. Let’s use this opportunity to set aside the constitutional debate and re-focus our efforts on listening to and delivering for the people of Wales.
