Press release

Junction closure for M6 bridge work near Kendal in Cumbria

Drivers using the M6 south of Kendal in Cumbria are being advised of a series of overnight closures taking place next month for repairs to a motorway bridge at junction 36 of the motorway.

Two bridges over the M6 at junction 36 at Kirkby Lonsdale which form part of the junction roundabout over the motorway linking the M6 and A590 and A65 local road are being repaired. Work in the week-long project includes replacing the joints - which allow the bridges to expand and contract in different weather conditions – as well as resurfacing and drainage repairs.

Highways Agency project manager Mark Mosley said:

This is vital maintenance to ensure that people using this junction can continue to enjoy safe, smooth and reliable journeys.

The project will begin on Monday 17 November and should be completed by Monday 24 November. The overnight work will take place between 8pm and 6am with only one bridge – either the eastbound (north) bridge or the westbound (south) bridge – closed at any one time. The junction slip roads will be reduced to a single lane with a 50mph speed limit for the whole week.

During the overnight bridge closures drivers used to joining or leaving the M6 at junction 36 will be diverted via alternative junctions with clearly-signed alternative routes.
