The Human Rights Council takes place in Geneva.

The United Kingdom thanks the Special Rapporteur for her diligence in producing her report despite the continued lack of cooperation from the Government of Eritrea. We strongly encourage the Government of Eritrea to engage with the Special Rapporteur, noting their membership of this Council and their obligation to cooperate with the Council’s mechanisms.

We remain concerned by the human rights situation in Eritrea. We urge reform of national service, especially given continued political progress in the region. We also urge the Government to release all political prisoners and those held for reasons relating to their religion or belief. We call on the Government of Eritrea to carefully consider the recommendations made as part of the Universal Periodic Review process in January, and engage with the international community to improve the human rights situation in Eritrea.

Madame Special Rapporteur,

I would be interested to hear your thoughts on the scale of detentions in Eritrea, and the conditions of places of detention.

Thank you.
