Hugo Swire said:

The UK is very concerned at the continued detention of former President Nasheed under anti-terrorism laws. It is important for international confidence in Maldives that Mr Nasheed, like all other citizens, is seen to be enjoying due legal process and respect for his fundamental rights.

It is also incumbent upon the Government of Maldives to ensure his safety. We urge calm right across Maldives and we encourage all parties to act with moderation and restraint.

The UK will continue to monitor the situation closely.
