Highways England lifts roadworks to help drivers this Bank Holiday
Highways England has lifted as many roadworks as possible from today to help bank holiday travellers over one of the busiest weekends of the year.
As announced at the beginning of the week, 155 sets of roadworks were being completed or lifted from England’s motorways and major roads by today (22 May) – leaving 96.9% of its 9,534 lane-miles free of roadworks.
In addition, Highways England put emergency measures in place to suspend these roadworks beyond the Bank Holiday weekend until Thursday, to help customers in the event of a rail strike.
In light of the suspension of industrial action these measures will not now be necessary and where possible work will return to business as usual from Tuesday, keeping England’s motorways and major routes in top condition for drivers across the country.
Simon Sheldon-Wilson, Customer Operations director at Highways England, said:
Our priority now is to ensure we get back to business as usual wherever we can from Tuesday, so that we can continue delivering our ambitious programme of work across the country to keep motorways and major roads in peak condition for our customers.
Highways England staff and our contractors will continue to work round the clock to ensure traffic can move around as easily as possible. We urge road users to plan ahead for their journeys and check conditions before setting out.
We know many people will be travelling to airports and holiday destinations, or to spend time with their friends and family this weekend, and we are keen that they get to their destinations safely.
We’ll continue to work closely with our partners to ensure we manage traffic and smooth journeys to big events like football matches or Bank Holiday shows, so everyone gets to have a safe and fun weekend.
In some locations it may not be possible to reinstate all roadworks by Tuesday, but they will be put back in place as soon as possible. See a map showing the locations of planned lifted and completed schemes.
We will complete 267 lane-miles of roadworks at 105 locations before the bank holiday, while 50 sets of roadworks and lane restrictions will be removed across 127 lane-miles of carriageway.
For the safety of drivers and their passengers, lane restrictions or temporary speed limits will need to remain at 63 locations. See a map showing the location of remaining schemes.
There is planned engineering work on several major rail routes over the bank holiday period, which will limit train services between Bolton and Manchester, and Oxenholme and Glasgow. It would take at least 4 nights to remove the traffic management and another 4+ to set it out again, the cost and time implications and increased risk to road workers removing and setting out the traffic management are too great for very little change for road users. There would also be safety implications for road users as safety barrier has been removed behind the variguard barriers as part of site clearance work. The narrow lanes and 40mph limit will remain in place over the Spring bank holiday.
