Welcoming today’s EU vote to improve security measures for the EU’s emissions trading system, UK energy and climate change minister Greg Barker said:

“Today’s decision will help crack down on those criminals targeting Europe’s carbon market. The EU’s carbon system is only as secure as the weakest link, which is why the UK’s been pushing for tougher European security measures.

“The new rules will put serious obstacles in the way of carbon crooks while ensuring this valuable market - much of which is based in London - can continue to function effectively. I want the City of London to remain the global capital for carbon trading and green finance and today’s decision is an important step to protect this market and restore confidence.”
