Fashion is GREAT event

Scott Wightman, British Ambassador to the Republic of Korea hosted the ‘Fashion is GREAT Britain’ event at his residence on 17 November. The event showcased the modern, trendy side of British style and fashion with participation by 30 fashion, beauty and lifestyle power bloggers and Kang So-young, Choi Hee, and Ivy, Korea’s leading fashion celebrities from TV fashion programme Follow Me.

At the Fashion is GREAT Britain event, popular British brands including Paul Smith, Barbour, Fred Perry, Mocks, and Duffer held styling classes and beauty brands Neal’s Yard and Penhaligon’s displayed their flagship products. Participating bloggers and celebrities got involved in a styling competition showcasing the latest British trends. They also enjoyed glamorous camping – or “glamping” - themed British brand showrooms and a mini catwalk fashion show, while enjoying Beefeater Gin cocktails.

Ambassador Wightman said:

With its rich fashion history, Britain is well-known around the world as the home of fashion’s most classical yet innovative and creative movements. Among fashion’s most influential designers, Vivien Westwood, Alexander McQueen, Stella McCartney, Paul Smith, Mary Quant, Jimmy Choo and Thomas Burberry, all based are in Britain but are global brands. Kate Moss, Alexa Chung and Kate Middleton are today’s young style icons. I am delighted to offer this fantastic opportunity to showcase the best of British style for those leading the way in Korean fashion and beauty.

  • Fashion is GREAT Britain

British fashion industry is robust. From street style to haute couture some of the most iconic brands in contemporary fashion hail from the UK. Designers such as Stella McCartney, Jimmy Choo and Paul Smith help ensure that fashion is one of our biggest export successes – UK designers export two-thirds of their output, while UK footwear companies export 90% of their production around the world. The UK is at the centre of the fashion world’s creativity and design talent – and London is one of the primary fashion hubs of the world. According to Oxford Economics, the direct value of the UK fashion industry to the UK economy is £26 billion (up from £21 billion in 2009), and the industry is estimated to support nearly 800,000 jobs. The British Fashion Council estimates that orders of over £100 million are placed during London Fashion Week each season. Fashion designers from the UK exhibit at Fashion Weeks in major cities in Europe, the USA and Asia, selling to an international customer base. Oxford Economics estimates that sales of UK designer clothing have been rising by around 20 percent a year in the last decade, and are currently worth somewhere between £2.5 and £2.9 billion (Future of Fashion Report 2012, British Fashion Council).
