The Prime Minister said:

I am honoured to congratulate the people of South Africa as you celebrate 20 years of democracy. South Africa’s struggle to achieve freedom and democracy has shown the world how much can be achieved with courage and determination. During my visits to South Africa, I have always been struck by how the progress you have made stands as a beacon of hope on the African continent and around the world. The South African people have shown us all that a process of reconciliation and forgiveness can truly lead to a brighter future.

Our 2 countries share warm ties, which have only deepened over the last 20 years. The United Kingdom will continue to stand with you as a steadfast partner for the next 20 and beyond. As Madiba said, it is our turn to make a difference.
