Free travel for military personnel supporting Paralympic Games security

Transport for London and the Association of Train Operating Companies will continue their offer of free travel during the Games to military personnel supporting the London 2012 Paralympics within London.

This was published under the 2010 to 2015 Conservative and Liberal Democrat coalition government

The offer also covers services to London and to other Paralympic venue locations.

Until 2359hrs on Tuesday 11 September, the following arrangements apply to military personnel engaged in supporting security for the 2012 Paralympics.

Travel within Greater London Fare Zones 1-9

Military personnel may travel for free in standard class only, when in or out of uniform and in possession of their MOD Form 90 personal ID, within London Fare Zones 1-9, inclusive of Watford Junction, on all National Rail, Tube, Docklands Light Railway, London bus and London Tramlink services.

Military personnel must present their MOD Form 90 personal ID to rail staff when requested.

Travel to and from places outside Greater London

Military personnel may travel for free in standard class only, when in uniform and in possession of their MOD Form 90 personal ID, on:

  • Any National Rail service to or from London, with the exception of Grand Central and Caledonian Sleeper services

  • Services to or from the following Games Venue stations: Cheshunt (for Lee Valley White Water Centre), Leigh-on-Sea (for Hadleigh Farm), Slough and Windsor & Eton Riverside (for Eton Dorney) and Sevenoaks (for Brands Hatch).

The offer for travel to and from places outside Greater London is not available for those out of uniform. Personnel out of uniform must buy a ticket in the normal way. HM Forces Railcard discounts will apply as normal.

Military personnel must present their MOD Form 90 personal ID to rail staff when requested.

The offers outlined above do not entitle personnel to free first class travel and do not extend to family members of military personnel.

Where free travel is allowed, military personnel will not require a rail ticket and rail staff will admit them to stations with ticket gates.

Personnel are to note that failure to comply with the arrangements detailed above may result in a penalty fare being charged. Details of the individual failing to comply will also be passed back to the individual’s parent unit.
