Foreign Secretary William Hague said that the election of Moncef Marzouki as President of Tunisia represents an important step forward for the country.

This was published under the 2010 to 2015 Conservative and Liberal Democrat coalition government

Speaking today the Foreign Secretary said:

“I welcome the election of Moncef Marzouki as President of Tunisia. This represents an important step forward for Tunisia following the country’s first democratic elections in October and I look forward to working closely with the new Tunisian government when it is formed.

“Across the region ordinary people are striving to build open, fair, peaceful and accountable societies. We support Tunisia’s efforts in this regard: the UK is working with partners in Tunisia to help strengthen transparency and accountability in public institutions. We are also providing British technical expertise on parliamentary structures and political parties and are helping to strengthen freedom of expression. This important work will continue”.
