Foreign Secretary welcomes South Sudan's admission to the African Union

Foreign Secretary William Hague has congratulated the African Union and the people of South Sudan on a "historic day" as South Sudan is admitted to the African Union.

This was published under the 2010 to 2015 Conservative and Liberal Democrat coalition government

Speaking today the Foreign Secretary said:

“I welcome the announcement by the African Union that South Sudan has been admitted as its 54th member state. Following accession to the UN, this is a further demonstration of South Sudan taking its rightful place among the international community. I congratulate both the African Union and the people of South Sudan on this historic day.

“The UK looks forward to working with South Sudan as a member of the African Union. We will continue to support South Sudan in its efforts to ensure lasting peace and development for all of the South Sudanese people.”
