Foreign Secretary welcomes new Lebanese Government

Foreign Secretary congratulates Prime Minister Tamam Salam on announcement of new Lebanese government.

This was published under the 2010 to 2015 Conservative and Liberal Democrat coalition government

The Foreign Secretary William Hague:

I welcome the announcement of Lebanon’s new inclusive government and congratulate new Prime Minister Tamam Salam and all others who have worked so hard to achieve this.

The UK looks forward to working with Prime Minister Salam and his new government as they seek to address the major challenges and opportunities now facing the country. These include the timely holding of Presidential elections; ensuring security and combating terrorism; helping the hundreds of thousands of Syrian refugees which Lebanon is generously hosting; and maintaining Lebanon’s neutrality in relation to the Syria conflict. I pay tribute to outgoing Prime Minister Mikati for all his work to keep Lebanon stable in turbulent times. We will continue to provide our full support to the Lebanese authorities in pursuit of peace and prosperity for Lebanon and the region.
