Foreign Secretary welcomes appointment of new Egyptian Prime Minister

Foreign Secretary William Hague described the appointment as an important milestone in Egypt's transition to full civilian, democratic rule.

This was published under the 2010 to 2015 Conservative and Liberal Democrat coalition government

Speaking today he said:

“The British Government welcomes the recent appointment by President Mursi of Dr Hisham Qandil as Prime Minister of Egypt. It is an important milestone in Egypt’s transition to full civilian, democratic rule.

“We wish Dr Qandil every success as he takes office at this important time in his country’s history, and encourage him in his efforts to form an inclusive government that governs on behalf of all Egyptians. The British Government will continue to support the people of Egypt and their aspirations for greater economic opportunities, political participation, freedom and human rights, and will work in close partnership with their elected leaders to that end.”
