Foreign Secretary on Turkey's constitutional referendum

The Foreign Secretary William Hague has made a statement following Turkey's referendum on Sunday 12 September.

This was published under the 2010 to 2015 Conservative and Liberal Democrat coalition government

The Turkish people voted in favour of reforms to their constitution, which would bring it further into line with Turkey’s commitments for EU membership.

Following the referendum, the Foreign Secretary said:

“I congratulate the Turkish Government on a peaceful and well organised constitutional referendum. The Turkish people have demonstrated their desire for reforms which, once implemented, will be an important milestone on the road to European Union accession. The UK has long been a strong supporter of Turkey’s membership of the EU, and I encourage the Turkish Government to ensure that these reforms are quickly and properly implemented”
