Foreign Secretary William Hague has given a statement on an explosion at Pike River mine in New Zealand.
The Foreign Secretary said:
“I am saddened to hear the news of the explosion at Pike River Coal mine in the South Island of New Zealand. My thoughts are with those who are missing, and also with their families and friends, who are awaiting news. Two British citizens are amongst those missing.
“Our High Commission in Wellington is liaising with the New Zealand emergency services and the company that owns the mine. They are monitoring the situation closely and have been in contact with the relatives in New Zealand of the missing British miners. The Foreign and Commonwealth Office has been in contact with the family members in the UK”.
