Foreign Office welcomes announcement of retrial for Bahraini medics

The UK welcomes the Bahraini Attorney General's announcement that the cases of medical personnel who had been sentenced to between 5 and 15 years in prison will be retried in a civil court.

This was published under the 2010 to 2015 Conservative and Liberal Democrat coalition government

A Foreign Office spokesperson said:

“We welcome the Bahraini Attorney General’s announcement that the cases of the medical personnel will be retried in a civil court and that he will also consider whether judgements passed by the National Safety Court comply with the rule of law. The decision to close the National Safety Court on 7 October is also a positive development. All civilian cases should be tried before civilian courts. These steps, if carried through in a fair and transparent way, will promote reconciliation in Bahrain and will constitute an important step towards reaching our shared goal of peace and stability for the country.”
