UK Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg said:

“I am deeply concerned by civilian deaths and casualties caused by recent shelling of the Turkish town of Akcakale. My thoughts are with the families of the victims after this terrible tragedy.

“We condemn all violence by the Syrian regime and demand that it avoids any repetition of today’s incident on the border with Turkey.

“We welcome the measured response that Turkey has shown to the events on their border thus far.

“I discussed the situation in Syria with President Gul and Prime Minister Erdogan during meetings earlier today, we will continue to work with our partners in the region to manage the impact of the Syria crisis on security and stability.

“We will also continue to work closely with Turkey to help manage the humanitarian pressures it is facing at the border. I announced earlier today new support from the UK that will provide 10,000 Syrian refugees who have escaped ongoing fighting with essential supplies to cope with the freezing Turkish winter.”
