Re definition of sustainable development:

We utterly reject the accusation that the building of new homes needs to be at the expense of the environment. The draft framework uses the established definition of sustainable development set out by the Brundtland Commission in 1987, and sets out clear environmental protections to ensure that inappropriate development is not approved.

The reforms will give much greater power to local people and make sure local plans reflect the needs of their areas in a way which is sustainable. For the first time local people have the chance to have a real say in how their towns and villages are developed, by giving them the power to produce Neighbourhood Plans which will become a formal part of the planning system.
