Press release

Delays expected on M6 and M42 motorways in the West Midlands on Monday 01 June

Drivers planning to use parts of the M6 and M42 in the Midlands tomorrow are advised to expect delays on sections of the motorways where the hard shoulder would ordinarily be open to traffic.

This press release is no longer current.

There is a technical problem with the cameras which play an important part in safely operating the hard shoulder as an additional lane during busy periods. This means the hard shoulder cannot be used as a running lane for traffic. As a result some capacity will be lost and there are likely to be some delays.

A spokesperson for Highways England said:

We are doing everything we can to rectify the situation as quickly as possible.

We treat the safety of drivers who use our roads with the utmost importance and it would be irresponsible if sections of the hard shoulder were opened to traffic with the cameras out of operation.

We apologise for any disruption that this may cause to people’s journeys and encourage drivers to plan their journeys before setting off tomorrow morning so they can avoid any delays.

The affected sections of motorway are:

  • M6 southbound between junctions 10a and 10

  • M6 in both directions between junctions 6 and 7

  • M6 northbound between junctions 4 and 5

  • M42 southbound between junctions 5 and 4

  • M42 in both directions between junction 3a and 4 and between junctions 5 and 6
