Consultation opens for waste permit at Ellesmere Port site

Environment Agency consulting local public on new waste permit

The Environment Agency is today (Monday 30 June) seeking views from the local community and interested groups following the application for an environmental permit from Island Gas Ltd.

The company has applied to the Environment Agency for a mining waste permit to manage wastes arising from drilling an exploratory borehole at their Ellesmere Port site on Merseyton Road. The proposal is to drill a vertical well to explore for potential oil and gas. The company is not proposing to carry out any hydraulic fracturing (fracking) as part of this activity.

An Environment Agency spokesperson said:

We are opening the consultation to invite any comments on local environmental factors. We will consider these whilst we assess the application before making a decision on whether to grant the permit.

The consultation will run until Friday 25 July 2014.
