Celebrating 30 Years of the Chevening Scholarship in Alexandria

Chevening Alumni reception to celebrate the 30th Anniversary of the Chevening Scholarship and the success of the Alexandria Alumni.

The newly appointed Consul General HM Ms. Caroline Alcock hosted a Chevening Alumni reception to celebrate the 30th Anniversary of the Chevening Scholarship and the success of the Alexandria Alumni. Welcoming the guests Ms. Alcock said that there have been nearly a 100 Alumni members from Alexandria, amongst which are some of the most inspirational that she has ever met, and that she is aiming to increase the number of applicants from Alexandria over the coming years.

Prominent figures of the Alexandria Alumni have pursued essential developmental projects after coming back to Alexandria, the reception also gave them the opportunity to reach out to the business community and businessmen at the reception, who were drawn by the realization of the Alumni members.

Guest speaker Heba Kholeif, a visually impaired Chevening Alumni, spoke of her how this scholarship has changed her life. After praising the support she received from the scholarship team she talked about how acquiring her master degree at Birmingham University has lead to a change in her career. Still working at the Bibliotheca, her role now is working on projects to help improve the lives of visual impaired people. She is currently working on a joint project with the Bibliotheca Alexandrina and the Light and Hope Association, supporting visually impaired children with multiple disabilities.

Guest of honour at the reception was Stephen Hickey, the deputy British Ambassador to Egypt. Mr. Hickey was in Alexandria for a two day visit and he emphasised that, “ the Chevening Programme is a great way of supporting Egypt’s future leaders and of strengthening cultural and academic links between UK and Egypt”. He also thanked the co-sponsors of the scholarship, which allows us to increase the number of scholarships each year. Our partners are BG, BP, HSBC and Vodafone, and we are looking forward to developing more partnerships”
