In a speech in Milton Keynes, Mr Cameron said the Big Society was key to “transforming our economy, our society, our country’s future”.

Mr Cameron’s speech was delivered on the same day as a Giving White Paper setting out plans to make it easier and more attractive to give time and money to good causes.

Amongst a number of measures set out in the White Paper was a commitment that Ministers will undertake a day of voluntary service over the course of the year with a charity or community group of their choice.

Mr Cameron said his long term task in Government, alongside building a dynamic economy, was building a “bigger, stronger society”.

The Big Society is not some fluffy add-on to more gritty and more important subjects. This is about as gritty and important as it gets - giving everyone the chance to get on in life and making our country a better place to live.

The PM also emphasised his pledge to make Britain the “most family-friendly” country in Europe and insisted that strong families were the foundation of a stronger society.

I am pro-commitment, I back marriage and I think it’s a wonderfully precious institution. Strong families are where children learn to become responsible people.

When you grow up in a strong family, you learn how to behave, you learn about give and take. You learn about responsibility and how to live in harmony with others. Strong families are the foundation of a bigger, stronger society.

Mr Cameron said he wanted the Big Society to be one of the “lasting legacies” of the Coalition Government.
