British specialist in LGTB rights in Lima thanks to BE Lima
The British Embassy in Lima and the National Coordinator for Human Rights successfully completed a project promoting the rights of the LGTB community in Peru.
The British Embassy in Lima and the National Coordinator for Human Rights organised a workshop on 21 March to speak on actions to fight discrimination against the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGTB) communities in Peru. The event took place at the British Embassy and included the following speakers: Jasmine O’Connor, International Senior Officer from Stonewall (UK based charity), Daniela Viteri, Human Rights Senior Advisor at the Ministry of Justice and Human Rights, and Miguel Porras, Senior Advisor of Congressman Carlos Bruce. Attendees included government officials from the Ministries of Justice and Human Rights, Women, Education, Defence, Labour, and Health.
Miss O’Connor was the main speaker at the workshop and spoke about the UK’s legislation that protects the rights of the LGBT community. Stonewall, the organisation she works for, is the leading charity in the UK. It works in favour of the LGBT community and is against all forms of discrimination. “The goal is to bring a range of stakeholders from government and diplomatic communities as well as LGBT activists to discuss the strategies that might be taken in Peru to protect LGBT minorities. In the UK we have the legislative framework to be able to protect people but in Peru the absence of such laws makes this type of discrimination a difficult issue to fight against,” Jasmine said.
The project with the National Coordinator for Human Rights, funded by the British Embassy, seeks to draw on the UK’s experience and Stonewall’s work to identify activities that could boost respect for LGBT rights in Peru and raise state and government awareness of this issue. The project also included a previous workshop organised on 19 March, which brought together national activists of LGBT groups to elaborate an action plan to promote the respect for the rights of the LGBT community in Peru.
