The British Embassy and the United Nations Development Plan (UNDP) will continue supporting the Office of the Ombudsman of Turkmenistan and promoting human rights education in Turkmenistan with the aim to raise awareness of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR).

A new project will complement and build on the lessons learnt from last year’s human rights project funded by the British Embassy in Turkmenistan. This demonstrated the need for knowledge and awareness about human rights among the duty bearers, such as law-enforcement government agencies, as well as among the right holders, especially the most disadvantaged groups such as women, youth and minorities.

The project aims to support Turkmenistan through a series of awareness raising events, namely human rights roundtables with government officials, Civil Society Organisations (CSOs) and youth representatives at the Human Rights Resource Centres.

Activities will include brain-ring games and lectures at three universities in Ashgabat and two velayats; and an advocacy round table with the Ombudsperson’s Office and development partners to promote human rights interventions in the country.

The events, which have been formally endorsed by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Turkmenistan, will be organised jointly with the newly created Institute of State, Law and Democracy of Turkmenistan and the Ministry of Education. The project will also enable closer communication between the Ombudsperson and representatives of civil society, who will take part in the activities conducted within the framework of the project.
