British Embassy promoting Rugby in Uzbekistan

Rugby is becoming increasingly popular in Uzbekistan. The British Embassy has been assisting the Uzbekistan Rugby Federation to promote and support development of rugby not only amongst adults but also amongst children. A good example of such cooperation was the Getting Into Rugby Festival held in Tashkent in October 2015. The British Embassy provided two rugby coaches from the UK military to conduct training classes for teams to play in a public park and at a training camp for the national team.

This year the Uzbek National Rugby team is playing in the Asian World Rugby Championships, which will take place in Tashkent this month. On 18 May Uzbekistan will play the UAE in a semi-final match that will decide which country they will be playing in the finals on 21 May. The British Embassy has again cooperated with the Uzbekistan Rugby Federation and provided a coach for the period of 1 month. He is Mr Benjamin Focas, who is helping the Uzbek National team prepare for these challenging matches. All members of the team are training very hard and we wish them all the best for their forthcoming matches.
