Work to replace major components on the A12 Bascule Bridge in Lowestoft has finished a day early.

The work, which began on 7 April, involved extremely technical works on one of four sets of hydraulic motors on the Bascule Bridge which had developed faults and needed replacing to help prevent the need for further maintenance work and to keep Bascule Bridge in a safe condition.

Highways England Asset Development Manager, Brian Pitkin, said:

We’re pleased we got the work done as quickly and efficiently as possible and that we finished earlier than planned.

We worked hard to carry out the work during the spring to avoid disrupting busy seasons and I’d like to thank local businesses and residents for their patience during the works.

The work consisted of replacing the hydraulic motors which power the bridge’s lifting mechanism and supporting steelwork.
