Approved training course for inquests

Final criteria for approved inquest training courses has been published.

We have recently launched a new inquest category of law in response to the expansion of legal aid under the Public Office (Accountability) Bill.

One of the requirements for the new inquest category of law is that providers employ a part-time equivalent supervisor in that category. The supervisor must meet a legal competence standard.

There are 2 routes available to meet this standard:

  • experience of carrying out a set number of inquest cases
  • attendance at an inquest training course approved by the Legal Aid Agency (LAA)

We previously published draft criteria for the training course alongside a survey asking for views on the proposals. The survey responses have now been analysed and the final criteria has been published.

Why is it happening now?

We are publishing the final criteria now so training course providers and others can see what we will use to approve inquest courses, and prepare accordingly.

Further information will be published shortly on how training providers can submit a training programme to the LAA for approval.

Where can I find out more?
