A1 Duns Road to Highfield resurfacing work
A £1.6 million scheme to resurface sections of the A1 between Duns Road and Highfields, along the Berwick-upon-Tweed bypass will begin next week, providing a safer and smoother road surface for drivers in Northumberland.
Work will begin on 6 November and take place overnight until 17 December.
Highways Agency project manager, Nick Adshead, said:
This is essential carriageway maintenance work which will improve the road surface and provide new road markings. The work will be carried out between 8pm and 6am, however the traffic management will need to remain in place until 12 noon as the new road surface will need time to cool and harden before the carriageway can be re-opened to traffic.
The work will be carried out in 6 phases. The work is planned to take place on the following dates, assuming reasonable weather conditions:
Phase 1: 6 to 11 November. The northbound carriageway through the Duns Road junction will be closed. Traffic signals will be in place on the southbound carriageway to maintain two-way traffic flow past the work and a 40mph speed limit will be in operation.
Phase 2 and 3: 11 to 27 November. One northbound lane will be closed through the Duns Road junction. A 40mph speed limit will be in place on the approach to the roadworks and drivers will be stopped at traffic signals and taken in convoy past the work at 10mph. Southbound traffic will travel past the work on the southbound carriageway under a 40mph speed limit.
Phase 4 and 5: 27 November to 6 December. The southbound carriageway will be closed through the Duns Road junction. Traffic will travel past the works in contra-flow on the northbound carriageway under a 40mph speed limit.
Phase 6: 6 to 17 December. The northbound and southbound carriageway will be closed between Duns Road and Highfields roundabout. Lane closures and a 40mph speed limit in place on the approach to the closures. Northbound traffic will be diverted via A6105 to Chirnside then B6355 back to the A1, southbound traffic will be diverted via the A1167 and A6105.
