Parliamentary Under Secretary of State and Minister for Defence Equipment, Support and Technology (including Defence Exports)

Responsibilities

The minister is responsible for delivering the Equipment Plan, DE&S reform, relations with defence industry and exports.

Priority areas:

  • DE&S reform
  • current delivery of the Defence Equipment Plan
  • defence exports

Other responsibilities include:

  • defence equipment and support agenda
  • UK/France High Level Working Group
  • Defence Science and Technology (including DSTL)
  • joint support chain
  • asset disposal, including PEX(A) lead
  • defence relations with Asia and the Gulf

Current role holder: Philip Dunne

Philip Dunne was elected Conservative MP for Ludlow, Shropshire in 2005.

Education

Philip studied politics, philosophy and economics at Oxford University.

Political career

After the 2010 election, Philip was appointed Assistant Government Whip, a role he had carried out in opposition. He has been a member of the work and pensions select committee, the public accounts committee and the Treasury select committee. In September 2012 he was appointed Minister for Defence Equipment, Support and Technology with responsibility for defence procurement and defence exports.

Career outside politics

Philip spent 20 years in business and investment banking. This included chairmanship of a Venture Capital Trust which invests in entrepreneurial new businesses.

Personal life

He is married with 2 daughters and 2 sons.
