Ministerial role

Parliamentary Under Secretary of State and Minister for Defence Equipment, Support and Technology (including Defence Exports)


The minister is responsible for delivering the Equipment Plan, DE&S reform, relations with defence industry and exports to the Gulf.

Priority areas:

  • Defence Reform Bill, including DE&S reform
  • current delivery of the Defence Equipment Plan
  • exports to the Gulf

Other responsibilities include:

  • support the Secretary of State on defence equipment and support agenda
  • UK/France High Level Working Group
  • Atomic Weapons Establishment (AWE)
  • Defence Science and Technology (including DSTL)
  • Joint support chain

Current role holder: Philip Dunne MP

In September 2012 Philip Dunne was appointed Minister for Defence Equipment, Support and Technology with responsibility for defence procurement and defence exports. He is the Conservative MP for Ludlow, Shropshire.


Philip studied politics, philosophy and economics at Oxford University.

Political career

After the 2010 election, Philip was appointed Assistant Government Whip, a role he had carried out in opposition. He has been a member of the work and pensions select committee, the public accounts committee and the Treasury select committee.

Career outside politics

Philip spent 20 years in business and investment banking. This included chairmanship of a Venture Capital Trust which invests in entrepreneurial new businesses.

Personal life

He is married with 2 daughters and 2 sons.
