The Rt Hon Steve Baker MP

Steve Baker was appointed Minister of State at the Northern Ireland Office on 7 September 2022.

He was previously Parliamentary Under Secretary of State at the Department for Exiting the European Union from June 2017 to 9 July 2018.

He was elected as Conservative MP for Wycombe in 2010.

Education

Steve was educated at Poltair School and St Austell Sixth Form College, followed by the University of Southampton, where he gained a Bachelor of Engineering in Aerospace Engineering. He later studied at St Cross College, Oxford University, where he earned a Master of Science degree in Computation.

Political career

Steve served on the Transport Select Committee from 2010 to 2013 and has been on the Treasury Select Committee since 2014.

Career outside politics

Steve spent ten years as an engineering officer in the Royal Air Force, serving all over the world.

He later worked as a consulting software engineer and manager, representing small and large corporations, including as Chief Architect of Global Financing and Asset Service Platforms at Lehman Brothers between 2006 and 2008. This work, and the financial crash in 2008, gave him an interest in the reform of the financial system.

He is a founding member of The Cobden Centre, an educational charity for research into economic and political science. He has also been an associate consultant with the Centre for Social Justice since 2008.

Personal life

Steve is married and his hobbies include skydiving and motorcycling. He is also a keen advanced driver, a fast catamaran sailor and occasional photographer.
