Capacity Market: new technologies 2026
Applies to England, Scotland and Wales
Consultation description
Rule 2.4 of the Capacity Market Rules requires the Secretary of State to consult interested parties each year to determine whether any generating technologies are capable of contributing to security of supply. This open letter seeks views on whether such technologies exist.
The government encourages respondents to provide evidence on any generating technologies that have emerged since the 2025 review and which are capable of: contributing to security of supply; are not already a Generating Technology Class; and may be eligible to participate in future Capacity Market auctions.
This may be of interest to energy suppliers, aggregators, developers of emerging technologies, consumer-led flexibility providers, other Capacity Market participants, academics, think tanks and organisations with an interest in security of electricity supply.
