UK sanctions on Burundi

This page provides guidance on the UK’s sanctions regime on Burundi, if the UK leaves the EU without a deal.

The UK is leaving the EU. This page tells you about sanctions regimes after Brexit if the UK leaves the EU without a deal, and will be updated if anything changes.

The Burundi sanctions regime

The Burundi (Sanctions) (EU Exit) Regulations 2019 are intended to ensure that certain financial and immigration sanctions relating to Burundi, which are currently in force in the UK under EU legislation and related UK regulations, continue to operate effectively after the UK leaves the EU.

This sanctions regime is aimed at encouraging the government of Burundi to

  • respect democratic principles and institutions, the rule of law and good governance in Burundi
  • participate in negotiations with its political opponents in good faith to bring about a peaceful solution to the political situation in Burundi
  • refrain from policies or activities which repress civil society in Burundi
  • comply with international human rights law and to respect human rights

When these regulations come into force they will replace, with substantially the same effect, relevant existing EU legislation and related UK regulations.
