Fit for Work guidance

This collection brings together all guidance on using Fit for Work to help employees stay in or return to work.

Fit for Work helps employees stay in or return to work by providing free, expert and impartial general health and work advice to employees, employers and GPs.

The assessments service, which provided occupational health assessments for employees at risk of long-term sickness absence in England and Wales ended on:

  • 31 March 2018

The assessments service, which provides occupational health assessments for employees at risk of long-term sickness absence in Scotland will end on:

  • 31 May 2018

No further referrals will now be taken, but if you have already been referred for a Fit for Work assessment you will receive the full 3 month support of the service to conclusion.

Employers, employees and GPs will continue to be able to use the Fit for Work advice helpline, website and web chat, which offer general health and work advice as well as support on sickness absence.

  3. Updated information - Fit for Work helps employees stay in or return to work by providing free, expert and impartial general health and work advice to employees, employers and GPs. There is also an occupational health assessment service which is available for referrals until 15 December 2017.
  4. Fit for Work guidance updated to reflect that, from 8 September 2015, employers can accept Return to Work Plans issued through Fit for Work as evidence of sickness absence in exactly the same way as a GP fit note.
