What we do

The UKHSA Antimicrobial Resistance and Healthcare-Associated Infection (AMR and HCAI) Division plays a leading national role in the prevention of HCAIs and AMR through world-leading public health microbiology, outbreak response, surveillance, antimicrobial stewardship, modelling, research and evidence-based interventions.

The division undertakes a broad range of activities including:

  • scientific research
  • input into the development of reference microbiology
  • surveillance, epidemiology and data modelling
  • evidence-based intervention development
  • outbreak and incident response
  • global partnerships

We monitor the spread of healthcare associated and antimicrobial resistant infections, support the development of novel diagnostics and ensure NHS systems are capable of pathogen detection and AMR monitoring. Our use of whole genome sequencing informs pathogen diversity and transmission dynamics, providing essential information for hospitals to identify whether repeated introductions of bacterial infections are from external sources or internal transmission.
