£9.5 million investment to transform Workington town centre (Levelling Up Fund 2)

Workington was allocated £9.5 million from the Levelling Up Fund for a variety of transport and culture projects that will be delivered by Cumberland Council.

The Workington Gateway Project includes:

Improvements to Ramsey Brow Junction

Ramsey Brow Junction will be widened on Hall Brow (A596). This will:

  • reduce pressure on a big pinch point for traffic
  • improve access to key employment areas such as the Port of Workington

Workington town centre active travel

Improvements will be made to pedestrian and cycling facilities in the town centre. These include:

  • an east/west cycle route through Hall Park that runs parallel to the A66
  • better crossings on Hall Brow and Ramsey Brow

This will provide a safer alternative to cycling on the main road.

Hall Park

Funding will help make the park more attractive and accessible with the installation of feature lighting at Workington Hall and a new Social Enterprise Centre within the Walled Garden.

The new Social Enterprise Centre will become a focal point for activity in the area with:

  • training for adults with learning disabilities
  • support for community groups and schools through horticulture activities

West House, Cumbria’s leading care and support provider for children, young people, and adults with learning difficulties, has submitted a planning application for the transformation of the walled garden space in Hall Park.

Leader of Cumberland Council, Cllr Mark Fryer, said:

The Workington Gateway Project is a real boost for transport, culture and regeneration in Workington. It represents an investment that will help grow the economy, improve the local environment and maximise the use and enjoyment of our historic Hall Park.

We’re delighted to be progressing these schemes and providing fantastic new infrastructure and facilities for our town and its people.
