£15.6 million for the Appledore Clean Maritime Innovation Centre (Levelling Up Fund 2)

Torridge were awarded £15.6 million from the Levelling Up Fund for the creation of the Appledore Clean Maritime Innovation Centre.

The Appledore Clean Maritime Innovation Centre 

The Appledore Clean Maritime Innovation Centre is a global innovation project located on the brownfield Middle Dock site in Appledore. The development will establish Torridge and wider northern Devon as a global-leading research and development destination for innovation in clean maritime technology.  

The centre will feature:  

  • cutting-edge research and industry partnerships from the Centre for Future Clean Mobility (CFCM, University of Exeter) and the University of Plymouth 
  • a range of offices and flexibly designed workshops to support business innovation  
  • access to the estuary for real-world product testing  
  • dedicated space for education and engagement activities

Improving offshore wind capacity 

The centre will provide a base for floating offshore wind activity in northern Devon, known as FLOW. Electricity generated by the Celtic Sea FLOW developments will be the equivalent of powering approximately three million homes and providing 3,000 jobs.
