Background

This project built on the findings of project FD2020 - ‘Regionalised impacts of climate change on flood flows’. It found strong evidence that the way catchments respond to the effects of climate change is not likely to be uniform. It’ll depend on a number of factors relating to that catchment. This means that it should be possible to develop a regional approach to predicting changes in flood risk as a result of climate change.

Approach

This project provided the most complete picture of the changes to river flows predicted by UKCP09 and other climate models. Using the same methods as FD2020, it evaluated the risk of changes in flooding for all the catchments in England and Wales currently monitored with gauges. It provided evidence of how regional approaches to allowances made for the effects of climate change could be calculated and used to inform operational decisions. It used this approach to develop revised guidance for flood managers and planners.

This project was started and completed in 2010 at a cost of £44,651.
